Chapter Nine

1:45 a.m.

Elaine took a breath and opened the door.

She led this time. This was her territory.

Funny how that particular possessiveness came out in a time like this. She’d enjoyed working at the Colby Agency since day one. It was the sort of job one didn’t dread going to, except maybe around holidays. But she hadn’t realized this fierce determination to protect the agency existed deep inside her.

Doing a good job and risking one’s life were two different matters. Still, she suffered no qualms about doing what had to be done.

The two large cases containing the bodies of the security guards still sat in the corridor near the freight elevator. An ache twisted in her chest when she thought of poor Joseph and the other man she hadn’t known. This would be a horrible Christmas for their families. Their children would forever associate their deaths with this time of year.

They’d be more warped about the holiday season than she was. And that was sad.

Truly sad.

She turned in the opposite direction. If these killers were enemies of the Colby Agency then there were two places on this floor that they would consider primary target areas.

Victoria’s office and the files room.

“Where’re we headed?”

He’d spoken the question so softly she’d barely heard him above the guessing game playing out inside her head. She wished there were a way to contact Ian Michaels or Victoria Colby-Camp herself.

“Victoria’s office.”

If Gibson had any thoughts on how they should proceed he kept them to himself. She appreciated his confidence in her, though as she moved forward, drawing ever closer to her destination, uncertainty tugged at her.

Outside the wall of glass to her right, snow continued to fall. It had to be six or eight inches deep out there. The city looked beautiful with the lights glistening against the contrast of the dark night and the pure white snow.

She wished she were out there, building a snowman or just flopped onto her back flapping her arms and legs to form a snow angel. She’d never done the former and couldn’t actually recall making the latter. Why couldn’t she have been a little more like everyone else? Why had her parents been so untouchable on so many levels?

More important, why had she turned out just like them?

Elaine pushed the thoughts away. She loved her parents and right now she had far more to worry about than making snow angels.

Mildred’s office had been ransacked. The sight drew her up short. The feel of Gibson’s comforting hand at her back made the realization easier to take.

This had to be about the Colby Agency.

Two people had died already and no one capable of saving the day had any idea.

She felt bad for thinking that. Gibson had done a great job of saving the day so far. She’d even helped a little. Maybe guys like Ian Michaels and Simon Ruhl could have done more, but it was the effort that counted.

Careful of the wreckage on the floor, she made her way to Victoria’s door.
